"Pssst, Pssst....hey you!" interrupts a voice out of the blue.
"Yes?", I answer, "And who are you and what do you want?"
"I'm that little wee voice you've been hearing all your life, but keep on ignoring; however, this time I'm here to help you get all your ducks in a row, as your mind is getting older and you definitely need somebody's help, so I'm here to do just that. To help you.."
"Well now, just what do you intend to do for me? For your information, W.L.V. (wee little voice), I'm writing a story on the Topic of 'neighborhood'....and if you'll just leave me be - I'll have it finished in no time flat - And, ON MY OWN, thank you."
"That's the problem, my dear." came the soft whispering voice, " You've forgotten already. The topic is not neighborhood this week, the topic is 'adulthood', and you wouldn't want to look foolish or stupid by barking up the wrong tree.. Right?"
Silence prevailed for a while. WLV backed off and I went out and got myself a cup of coffee to settle my nerves.
Once again I sat down at my computer and began to write:
"Okay, you 'Inquirer lovers', Let me tell you the "secret, behind the scenes" story of that famous young man that became a Hero by robbing from the rich and giving to the poor. Did you know that Robin Hood was really a..."
"Psssst, Psssst..." came the sound of the voice once again, interrupting my thoughts.
"What Now?" I shouted in exasperation. "Can't you just go away and leave me alone so I can do my thing?"
"I'm sorry, Dear, but the Topic isn't Robin Hood, either. Like I told you earlier, the Topic is 'adulthood'. It's obvious you need assistance as you cannot seem to remember anything anymore....so won't you let me help you, please?."
Silence prefailed; so I began once again with a anecdote about L'il Red Riding Hood and her grandmother, when I heard the familiar "Pssst, Pssst!"
This time I broke down sobbing: "I do know the Topic is 'adulthood', Honest! But I've been trying to come up with some other "Hood-winking" story instead. You've been with me throughout my whole life, constantly bugging, nagging, bothering, pestering and annoying me from childhood to teenage to my adult years with all those "Do's and Don't's, etc., so surely you know better than anybody else why I cannot write about my 'adulthood' - as it is degrading, unprintable, embarrassing, and a complete fiasco family-wise, finance-wise and faith-wise; So, what do you suggest, WLV? You know I don't write fiction, so what do I Do? Give up writing?" I asked pleadingly, as I continued to weep, blow my nose and drag myself down further, off the curb and down further into the gutter below.
The room was quiet - and the silence was deafening as I waited for my wee little voice to speak up, to answer, to connct...but there was nothing.
I finally deleted the neighborhood, Robin Hood and Red Riding Hood stories, then turned off the computer and went to bed.
And there, alone in the dark, I knew my wee little voice would return - (God's Promise: "For I will never leave you or forsake you") and this time I wasn't going to shut it out or ignore it; for this was the first time I realized how precious time really is - and since I have already squandered alot of my 'adult life' I'm not about to squander my Golden Years as well.
Just as I was falling to sleep, I heard an old familiar voice: "Psssst, Psssst...not to worry my Child, I'm here." and I slept in perfect peace.
