So for me to find myself attracted to this guy and then flirting with him was really out of character at this juncture of my life. I blame it on the season. You know, in the spring… thoughts turn to love… blah, blah, blah.
We were at a church snow retreat and somehow ended up at the same table the first night for dinner. You have to understand that I sort of knew this guy already, and had on several occasions given him freezer-burn with my icicle princess imitation. He was a little wary of me by this time so my decision to relax for the weekend and let what ever happen, happen, may have caused him some confusion. Because I was actually nice to him that first night. Chatty. Funny. Even, yes, a little flirty.
I don’t know. I think being in such a beautiful location where God’s presence was so abundantly felt, knocked down some of the ice blocks I hid behind. I just wanted to be carefree and playful that weekend. He looked like a good playmate. We found ourselves skiing together to the waterfalls the next day and enjoying a conversation of significant substance. I would tell my girlfriends later that by the time we had reached the destination spot I had made a new friend but by the time the weekend was over I knew I was going to marry him.
Yes, I said marry him. Quite a turnaround I admit but God was melting the snow in my heart that weekend with a blow torch.
So… if I was going to marry the guy I really did need to get to know him. We were moving into spring, as I have mentioned and the next group activity our church had planned was volleyball. I despise team sports; have a fear of flying balls connecting with my face in fact. But, upon learning from a friend that he was on the team, and that going out afterward for coffee and dessert was part of the routine, I decided this might provide the opportunity I was looking for. I joined the team. Carpooling with him to the local Y for the game was the next step.
It was during one of those post game coffee chats that the ground work for the first date was laid. We talked about the latest movies playing with me dropping hints left and right about going to see one. I was blatant; he was totally oblivious. I sought my brother’s advice. “Why don’t you just ask him out?” Hmmm. Concept. Okay, why not.
Nervous fingers punched numbers on my phone. Several ‘er’s and 'um’s later a date was set for the following Sunday night. March 20th; I noticed my calendar said it was the first day of spring. How interesting. Time would tell if something would grow from this.
Well, I sometimes look back thinking if God was the one planting the seeds of romance between us, he was fertilizing it with Triple 16! Because after the movie, he took me to dinner where we talked until they kicked us out of the restaurant. We sat in his car and continued talking until one in the morning. And then….he kissed me. Wow; Triple 16 baby! And, it went both ways. He is less vocal about it then I am but we both know what happened that spring night 15 years ago.
If spring is the result of warmth caused by the turning of the earth’s axis, what shall we call the axis shift I was experiencing? Some call it spring fever. We called it falling in love.
