Look out at me,
As if to say, I know you,
But who are you?
The woman she used to be
Struggles to break free,
To be loosed from the bonds
Of dementia.
A mischievous twinkle
Sparks in her eye as
Recognition dawns,
If only for a moment.
I wonder what she’s thinking;
Does she remember bouncing
Me on her knee when I was but
A wee wane?
Are the memories there, of
Me and my family coming
To her house for dinner
And homemade ice cream?
Of my brothers and I
Playing in the sandbox
Outside, and hide and seek
In the barn?
What lies behind those
Eyes that once held
Laughter and delight
At simply being alive?
Is she content with her life
The way it is now, her days
Spent in a nursing home, or does
She long for what used to be?
----
It no longer matters
That her twilight years
Were spent in a nursing home
For now she is in her eternal dwelling.
