Who instilled artistic fear
As she waved her drawing weapon
And began to sketch a sphere.
Charcoal screeched across the board
Yet her voice was more severe.
“Your lines are stiff and lazy.
Stand up and move!” she’d bark.
Our class complied with rules
Taught by Ms. Tiger Shark
Who swam around us scolding
About the use of light and dark.
“Light yields life to canvas;
It controls the viewer’s eyes,
Bouncing off the dark tones
And balancing surprise.
Create art without contrast
And the blooming flower dies.”
With rolling eyes we listened
To the connoisseur’s advice
We aimed for affirmation
And improved our drawings twice.
Who would want to argue
With a teacher cold as ice?
We chose our colors wisely -
To our lights we added white.
Behold the end result…
Ms. Tiger Shark was right!
Our drawings needed contrast
To be bold as day and night.
Ishikawa’s lesson,
How dark reveals the light,
Is taught by another teacher,
The One who’s always right.
He says diverge from darkness;
Contrast shows us bold and bright.
The Master teacher tells us,
It’s time to be displayed,
But be prepared for critics
Who might want your light to fade.
So spread your light on others
And brighten up their shade.
