To gather my mail,
I bumped into an angel,
So peaceful and pale.
The envelope she offered
Handwritten in gold.
“Here is your invitation,”
She sang loud and bold.
“You are hereby invited
To dine with the King.
He’s waiting in his kingdom.”
I heard angels sing.
How could I say no to this–
This awesome request?
So I hurried to pack since
I must look my best.
I combed through my closet,
Tossed clothes left and right.
Nothing seemed appropriate,
Too old, plain, or tight.
What a challenge, I realized,
To know what to bring
On this jubilant journey
To meet with the King.
A princess should look proper
In more costly clothes.
At last, the angel returned
To see what I chose.
“Your suitcase is too heavy…
You needn’t over-pack.
Let’s take a look inside there…
Anything you lack?”
She shook her head and smiled,
Then pulled from the pile,
My high heels and ruffled dress.
“What’s wrong with my style?”
I watched her and wondered now
Why the removal?
“You won’t need a stitch of these
For his approval.”
Now my suitcase was empty,
My joy diminished.
But the angel assured me,
We weren’t finished.
Just an echo in my case,
Not a single thing.
How could I, so poorly dressed,
Bow before the King?
“Clothes are just garnish and won’t
Bring the King pleasure.
But I’ll swap them for new clothes,
His finest treasure.”
She filled my suitcase, saying,
“The King has sent these.”
I peaked inside once again,
Was still not at ease.
“Vintage clothes once worn by him–
The King’s only son.
I packed meekness, hope, and love.
Now you’re almost done.
Jesus wore these humbly
from when he was born.
At death, he wore forgiveness
When His heart was torn.
Just one more item’s needed,
Vital that you bring:
Pack your faith in Christ,” she sang,
“Fashion for the King!”
