"Clarissa, I want to go to Brazil. I know that's where the Lord wants to to be and I want you to go with me."
Clarissa didn't know what to say. It had been almost a year since Carlton had died and she had been in New Zealand.
She now worked along side her parents as a missionary and wanted to do what was right, but she had fallen in love with Jonathan and wanted to go with him.
"Brazil? That's a world away. You don't know anything about the culture or the people. At least here you are safe."
"I know Clarissa, but Doctors Without Borders has offered me an opportunity that I just can't pass up."
"Jonathan, she hesitated, I just can't leave my parents to go to the jungle."
He smiled at her, "isn't that what missionaries do?"
She didn't know what to say.
“I love you Clarissa and I know you love me. I see it in your eyes. I want you to be my wife and
go with me to Brazil.”
Her mouth flew open. “What did you just say?”
“I said I love you and I want to marry you.”
“You're right doctor, I do love you and I do want to be your wife...”
“But?”
“Brazil. I don't know much about Brazil except what I've seen on the Discovery Channel's special about the Amazon pink dolphins .”
He saw the hesitation in her eyes. He loved her, but Doctors Without Borders needed a doctor
in Amazon Rainforest.
“Clarissa, I love you, but I'm a doctor and I go where I am most needed and I'm needed in Brazil.”
“Alright Jonathan, I'll marry you and I'll go to Brazil with you.”
He couldn't contain his excitement. He picked her up and swung her around.
Mr. And Mrs. Aderholt heard the commotion and came running.
“What's all the ruckus?”
“Mom and dad ,Jonathan has ask me to marry him and I said yes.”
Her father was the first to speak.
“That's wonderful dear. When is the big day?”
Jonathan interjected before Clarissa could say anything, “Actually, we are getting married tomorrow and leaving for Brazil.”
Mrs. Aderholt was speechless.
“Clarissa, is this true?”
“Yes sir. Jonathan has been offered a position in Brazil and we have to leave tomorrow if he is to get there in time.”
“OK, my dear,” Mrs. Aderholt patted her hand, “we'll make the best of the situation.”
“Thanks Mom. I know this is hard on you and dad, but I love Jonathan and my duty as his wife is to go
where he goes.”
“My dear, your father and I just want you to be happy.”
“I am mom. Don't worry.”
“Tell me more about where you'll be going.”
Jonathan walked over to where they were standing.
“Mrs. Aderholt, I know that you and Mr. Aderholt are worried about your daughter, but she will be well protected.”
“We know Jonathan. We just want her to be happy.”
“She will be.”
“Now, where will you two be staying?”
“We will be stationed in Cruzeiro do Sul.,Acre which is situated at the foot of the Andes Mountain Range and located in the Amazon Rainforest. Doctors Without Borders is in desperate need of doctors in this region.”
“Is it safe?”
“Mr. Aderholt, you know I can't guarantee our safety.”
“Maybe Clarissa shouldn't go.”
“ Dad, I know you're concerned, but Jonathan wouldn't put me in harm's way.”
“Tell us more son.”
“It is inhabited by only 600 people, who live amongst forests within forests, mountains and waterfalls.
There about six known Indian peoples of the Amazon Basin and some of these people have never seen a doctor and they urgently need the medical care that I can provide.”
“You have our blessing and we know that you and Clarissa will make a difference.”
“Yes sir, we will.”
Clarissa knew that she was making the right choice and this trip would be the trip of a lifetime again.
