Once snow has lulled the world to sleep;
When village-lights are faint aglow,
And shadows are in slumber deep.
If I meander, soft and slow,
And follow where my breath does go,
The town will turn to fields tucked in
Beneath a sweep of shimmering snow.
And there, on every barren limb,
On every fence-wire, dark and dim,
Are crystal chimes of frozen fire
Aglimmer from a light within.
Oh, how it does my soul inspire,
This glacial glass, this ice on fire!
And as the breeze stirs -- soft delight --
The chorus of a crystal choir.
And so beside this field of light
I pray upon this Holy night:
My heart lifts high, my head bows deep;
For I have found the purest light.
And as I walk the silent streets,
My soul no longer lies in sleep;
And shadows are no longer deep,
And shadows are no longer deep.
