TITLE: Blessings and Blowing Winds | Previous Challenge Entry

A family braved the wind and snow
To sing carols to their neighbors,
It was their gift of love, God’s labor.
Four children and their mom, a nurse,
Sang “Silent Night”, but just one verse.
Outside our window their voices lifted,
While on the wind the song notes drifted.
Dad, impressed, invited them in,
While shaking hands, he smiled and then
Mom broke away from doing dishes,
And we all exchanged Christmas wishes.
They didn’t linger--no time for that,
They buttoned back up, tied on their hats.
The children winced at the bitter cold,
But into the night, their songs foretold. . .
Of a Savior born in a lowly manger
His love given freely to friend or stranger.
Hearing the messages carols conveyed,
Around the globe, Christians bowed and prayed.
“Joy to the World”, “The First Noel”,
Each year they caroled I could tell
God watched these children as they grew--
He was the only Dad they knew.
The sparks in hearts this family lit
Blessed them too, so they couldn’t quit.
Friendships birthed from love they’d shown
Continued long after the kids were grown.
Throughout the year dust may collect
On memories we resurrect,
But this one comes alive each year
As friends and family gather near.
Author’s Note: The mother in this poem became best friends with my mother and remained so until her death. My mom, and many others truly missed this servant of God.
