All day the stress had been building. First the toilet had overflowed while Jamie, her 2 year old, was sitting on it. Four months of potty training down the drain - or not down the drain.
Then Lois, her mother-in-law had called to “discuss” a comment Jill had made on the phone yesterday. Jill didn’t even remember the comment, much less mean anything by it. Tell that to Lois.
A half-hour later, John called to say he had missed his flight, which meant he would also miss their meeting with Evan’s teacher and principal – the third one this month and Jill suspected it would be the last. Most likely Evan would be expelled.
Her head hurt, her eyes burned and her insides quaked.
From somewhere in the recesses of her heart she heard…
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”
Be anxious for nothing? She felt herself snap.
She gathered up a fistful of unpaid bills and disconnect notices, shook them in the air and in that shrill voice she hated so much, she shouted, “Ok, God, you want me to stop being anxious, then you pay these bills! You try to raise these kids with an absentee husband, you deal with all the crap in my life!”
She was pretty sure that didn’t qualify as “prayer and supplication with thanksgiving”, but she had certainly let her requests be made known unto God!
She collapsed in a chair. She had just yelled at God. She waited for the inevitable lightning bolt.
Then gently, like a breeze that caresses your face in the spring she felt it come creeping into the recesses of her heart. Peace. Sweet peace. Peace like she hadn’t felt in months.
“And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Evidently, God is not shocked when we snap, but understands and is faithful to His word, especially when we are at the end of our rope.
