"Is that it?" she thought. Then she exclaimed, "Nuts, it was just a twig!" A storm was brewing so the stream was especially active and filled with debris. Finally, her precious special leaf floated by.
She hoped she had wasted enough time. The mail-man was always late. The precious little girl had waited for weeks since she had convinced her mom to place her order from the 1900 Sears, Roebuck and Co. catalog. It claimed to be the Cheapest Supply House. Clear from Chicago, Illinois the catalog was always cherished reading in most homes.
Anna earned her money from chores done at old lady Melon's house after school and on Saturdays. She dusted her furniture, swept floors, and fed the farm animals. She even helped her untangle her yarn. Sometimes it seemed to take hours. It took her a year to save up enough money for her purchase.
"Here he comes!" She jumped up and down and eagerly waved her arms. She could hardly contain herself. She had been greeting the mail-man every day for almost two weeks.
"Did I get a package?"
"Well now, Missy, let me look." He dug in the pile of mail and finally produced a brown paper wrapped parcel tied with string. "I think this may be what you've been waiting for."
Anna began to cry with joy as she gently accepted her package. She walked very slowly and deliberately into her house and showed her mother. "Oh, Anna, I am so happy it finally came." "Let me cut the string for you."
She sat at the kitchen table and gently peeled the corners of the paper back. The box inside glistened as if it was welcomed by the shaft of light that rested on it. She could see her beautiful new treasure through the clear cellophane front of the box.
The catalog ad scrolled through her little mind.
"Handsomely Dressed Doll - Bisque head, flowing curls, jointed body and moving eyes. A very tastefully gotten-up costume, and the highest grade doll that we sell. Length 17 ½ inches. Price....$1.50"
She had never seen anything quite so wonderful. It was truly worth all the work and waiting.
Anna's mother looked on, her heart full of love for this special little girl. She was very proud of Anna's hard work and steadfastness in saving her money for so long.
Surrounded with her cute bonnet, the beautiful bisque doll peeked out from under the blonde curly bangs with the most beautiful blue eyes. Her pink frilly dress ensemble was completed with bloomers trimmed in lace. Tiny white leather boots with eyelet shoelaces encased her feet. Delicate little hands were decked out in white lace gloves. The white beauty queen sash that splashed gold letters across the doll's chest really tells this story.
It said "Patience is my name."
