From his vantage point--a boulder--he studied his world quietly.
I spanned the yard beyond my fence, admiring wildflowers and their blooms;
When there again, the furry guy, but a new post he now assumes.
Oh wait, what’s this, now there’s two--the original squirrel I’ve spied,
He hadn’t run off like I’d thought, rather the critters have multiplied.
In my viewing I clearly see one is bigger than the other,
Perhaps they’re a dad and son or a daughter with her mother.
I wonder what they’re up to as they scamper about the rocks,
I’m certain that they’d run and hide if I approached them in my socks.
I’d never want to scare them, so I remain observant from my chair.
Occasionally they look my way, then at each other we just stare.
The smaller critter is playful--stretched on legs, he’s standing tall.
Is he looking for something special, or just looking and that’s all?
Two birds fly by, he scurries off, but seconds later reappears,
Timidly now he scales the rock, crouching slowly in his fear.
Back and forth, up and down, he’s amusing me without even trying,
Gone again--no there he is--wrong, it’s the adult that I am eyeing.
I linger, spanning the woodsy field; a humming bird sips a flower,
Blissful butterflies flutter by and the trees smile from recent showers.
God cares for all living things, wild flowers and towering trees,
I’m smiling at these critters when I’m kissed by a summer breeze.
A thought comes to mind before beginning my meditation,
I ought to play hide and seek every day with God’s creations.
With fresh eyes I might see things I ignored in days gone by,
A whole new world of beauty could open to me if I try.
As I bring this to a close, the boulder beckons my attention,
Again I spot the frisky squirrels--I thought it worth a mention.

As for the typo, I had one in a title and I could have kicked myself at first. The heart of the writer is seen in the message. Good message.
God bless and keep writing.
