Trish had always been smart, and her ability to memorize lists of dates and facts and vocabulary words with just an hour or so of concentrating on them had served her well throughout high school, and had helped her through all of her pre-nursing courses. But for some reason, biochemical formulas – like the Krebs cycle - had eluded her.
What in the world did these obscure chemical reactions and silly abbreviations have to do with being a nurse, anyway?
Trish had known she wanted to be a nurse since she was a child. After helping her mom take care of their Grandma Rose, who had lived with them for the years before she’d died, she’d come to strongly believe that it was what God had called her to do. Her high school teachers had agreed that her grades would help her survive college and that her compassionate nature would be perfect for nursing.
So why couldn’t she learn this?
Her eyes swept the page again. She looked at the diagram and grimaced, but determined not to let it defeat her. The Krebs cycle was about cellular respiration … OK, that was simple. Cells are the foundation of the body, and they undergo this process to give our organs the energy they need. But it got more complicated and there was ATP and mitochondria and pyruvate and … ugh, it was hopeless. She didn’t know why it kept slipping out of her brain, no matter how hard she tried. It was just a list of facts; like any of the other lists of facts she’d successfully memorized. If she just kept her mind on it and pressed the facts into her head, she knew she could do it. She’d always been able to do it, and she wouldn’t let one silly formula stop her from her calling. She’d never needed much help with schoolwork before, so she couldn’t imagine how to begin getting help with anything – let alone something this simple. Her mind could control this Krebs thing; she just knew it.
Wait a minute … what had she been thinking?
Who was in control here, anyway? If God had truly called her to be a nurse, then God would find a way for her to acquire the knowledge she needed to understand the bodies He had created. If she was to retain enough of the Krebs cycle – or anything else to pass the course, then He would help her. It wasn’t about straining her brain or mastering this set of facts. It was all about letting the One Who made her body help her learn what she needed to take care of the bodies of her future patients.
She put down the book one more time, but this time it wasn’t out of frustration. Instead of sitting at the desk staring at a bunch of elusive words, she’d put in some time on her knees, concentrating on asking for the right kind of Help.
