Topic: Memory (07/10/08)
Explain to me what happens when you stride purposefully into a room…and then have no idea why you are there. Where did that thought go? Of course, you left it in the previous room. When you walk back into the room you just came from, lo and behold, there is your thought…just hanging in the air. So you try again, walking to the other room repeating like a mantra the reason you are moving toward it. This time you remember.

I speak from experience.

Your brain is a marvelous organ. It is the seat of consciousness, thought, memory, and emotion. It also functions as the primary receiver, organizer and distributor of information for the body. I’ve been told everything you ever smelled, heard, saw or thought is still in there. Amazingly, it’s in alphabetical order.

I’ve been talking to someone and just can’t remember their name, but I know it starts with a “G”. Now how do I know that little tidbit? Hours later, that “G” gets connected to the name “Gloria” and my mind can rest.

Apparently, as we grow older, the short term memory goes first. Talking on the phone with my brother, he says, “I can’t remember what I had for dinner last night but I can tell you what happened in 1950”. And, oh the stories he can tell. If only we could download his brain.

As a “semi-literate” about computers, I understand the hard drive is the primary computer storage device to permanently store and retrieve information. It even retains the information when the computer is turned off.

Occasionally, if your computer lasts long enough (I’ve experienced too many crashes for it to matter) you are asked to “de-fragment”. This rearranges the files on your hard drive so they are back in order. I need that. There are way too many fragments floating around in my “hard drive”. I fear I’ve had some “crashes”.

After “defragmenting” you then “compress” your information. This increases the amount of information that can be stored on your hard drive. A disk compression utility overrides the standard operating system routines.

In the early 1970’s, I went through two years of “defragmenting”. So many files were rearranged that I became like a new person. Then came the sometimes painful utility of “compressing”. And when my standard operating system…my old self…wanted to take over, the “Compressor” was there to override.

Regular defragmenting and compressing…called reading my Bible, praying, going to church, fellowshipping with other believers and then spending time alone with God in meditation…has prevented any crashes lately.

Very enjoyable piece. I know the feeling of going into another room and forgetting why I'm there. It's too familiar. Or forgetting someone's name whom I've known for several years. Always good to learn more about how computers work. Thank you.

I liked this little reflection. I wasn't sure
at first, as it didn't
seem particularly `driven' ... more like a
gentle ramble through the theme ... but then at the end there is the "a-ha, that's interesting / worth-thinking about" moment. Sorry, I can't think of any improvements I could suggest.
