On another bench, sat a well-wrapped parcel, brightly colored, tasseled and bowed. It soon brought the attention of the passing crowd. On opening they found only cheap plastic toys.
Jim, a derelict had also passed by the expensive looking present, but his hunger made him choose the brown paper bag. Jim had hoped to find food; he hadn’t eaten for two days.
He opened the paper bag with little expression; His derelict life held little to be excited about. Food was food, wherever you could find it.
Suddenly, his expressionless eyes turned to curious amazement. Slowly and carefully he removed the strange object in the bag. Turning it in his dirty wrinkled hands he observed the streaks of light that flowed from cracks on its shiny glazed surface.
Jim’s hunger was now replaced with intrigue; he wondered should he remove the cork? He held his breath as he slowly removed it. ‘Pop’ the cork was out! Bright light covered him transforming him from head to toe.
What was once, a disheveled, no hope old man, was now a bright, clean, purposeful, well assured man! Jim looked over himself in utter disbelief and amazement. “What has happened?” he cried out loud!
“Welcome into my Kingdom,” a kind voice said to him. “To the outcasts I have provided a home, a new life; one that will last forever”.
“But why me?” Jim exclaimed; almost too embarrassed to even think he could be of any worth.
“I died that you might live.” came the reply. “To all that hunger and thirst I will give the water of life freely,” spoke the kind voice.
Jim was astounded! “But why the cracked earthen vessel,” Jim asked?
“I came to earth from my Heavenly Kingdom, made as an earthen vessel, weak and vulnerable like you, that I might share in your humanity.
I am God’s only Son full of light and truth. I was rejected by the world so that all who ‘will’ may live through me in risen transforming life.
For all who hunger and thirst for the living God shall receive the light of life. It was for this purpose I came, to save such as you”.
Then the voice left with a solemn promise, “Live in your new life Jim, and I will be with you always, even unto the end of the world”.
