That’s all I simply ask.
"There’s just five minutes now to spare
Since we’ve finished our task.
We’ve just looked at creation,
The wonders God has made.
Perhaps you’d like to know something
That I’ve not yet explained."
And so the hands point upwards.
The queries start to come,
As one by one these nine year olds
Leave every brain cell numb.
Why did God make the world shaped round?
How come our voices make this sound?
Before time, just what did God do?
Is life on other planets too?
Does He have arms and legs like me,
And laugh at things that are funny?
I wonder why God made me, me.
With straight hair rather than curly.
Why can’t I understand my sums?
All I can do is play the drums!
How come my eyes are coloured green?
And why are boys always so mean?
Who first thought to milk a cow?
Is Fluffy up in Heaven now?
Why did God make dinosaurs?
And squirrels to walk on all fours?
Why are giraffes so very tall,
But insects teeniest of all?
Why make nettles, wasps and weeds?
And how come grapes have all those seeds?
Why can’t we all have wings to fly,
Like little sparrows in the sky?
And why did God made Brussels sprouts?
They’re something we could live without!
How was Eve made from Adam’s rib?
Why did the snake tell her a fib?
How come they both ate from that tree,
When God had told them ‘Leave it be.’?
And God still treated them with kindness,
Even with their sin and blindness?
What would the world be like without,
A hint of sin, a trace of doubt?
How can we leave temptation’s way
And follow Jesus every day?
I find it so hard to be good,
And do the things I know I should.
Five minutes whizz past in a blur.
The kids have now caused quite a stir.
I only answer what I can
And point them to God’s master plan.
"The Bible gives directions,
To answer what life brings.
Though not to all your questions,
About the little things.
The most important issue, kids
Is that you know the Lord.
If you want to know about Him,
You must look in His word.
Some things we’ll never know for sure,
Until we reach His throne.
But until then, we’ll stand secure,
On what He’s promised to His own."
And so I leave my group of five
Exhausted, yet revived.
Such little, complexly made minds
Rouse me each week His face to find.
