“What seems to be the problem here?” Pastor James Veron asked, entering the room with a concerned look on his face. “Sounds like one of you is upset about something and doesn’t mind letting the whole congregation know about it.”
“Mr. Johnston took it upon himself to change today’s music list,” Jason offered like a child whose piece of candy had been stolen.
“Hmmmm…that so, George?” Pastor Veron queried.
“Well, it is. But Jason never let me explain why I put the new music together…”
“It doesn’t matter why, Mr. Johnston. The issue is that it’s my job, and my job alone. It was rude and out of line for you to interfere.”
“Pastor, do you think you could get this young pup to quiet down long enough for me to explain exactly why this discussion needs to end and we all need to get into the fellowship hall and begin today’s worship service?”
“Jason,” Pastor Veron began, “although it appears as though this will be a difficult request, I am going to ask you to give George a few minutes to explain why he felt the need to create a new music sheet for this morning’s service. You okay with that?”
“Sure, whatever, can’t wait to hear it.”
“Go ahead, George.”
“Well, I was the first one to arrive at the church this morning. Right while I was getting in the door, I heard the phone ringing. I hurried in and answered it. It was a woman. Said her name was Sally McPherson and that she would not be in church today…”
“My wife did not call here this morning!”
“Jason! Please give George time to finish what he has to say,” Pastor Veron intervened.
“She said her and her husband, which I assumed was Jason, were both under the weather and needed time to get better so they could return to fellowship next week. I thought that since Jason and Sally were not going to be here, and I couldn’t find the music list for this morning’s service, I better make one up in a hurry, so I did.”
“Sally and I are both here. She didn’t call and talk to you this morning,” Jason said under his breath, hoping his Pastor could not hear him.
“Well, our congregation has gotten so big,” George Johnston continued, “that I didn’t know we had a new McPherson family, let alone two Sally McPhersons.”
“Yes, George, Sally and her husband Samuel have been attending service the past few weeks, but he helps with the teenage Sunday School class and she works in the nursery, so you might not have met them yet.”
Jason McPherson lowered his head in shame. All he could think about was how quickly he had let his emotions take hold of him. “I’m sorry. I just thought that George was interfering with my work, and I didn’t know the whole story. I should have let him explain what happen. I’m sorry. Please forgive me for rushing to judgment like that, raising my voice, and putting my pride before fellowship and worship.”
“It’s okay, Jason,” George replied. “It was just a misunderstanding.” He shook Jason’s hand and gave him a pat on the back. “Now let’s get in there and start the service.”
The three men walked into the fellowship hall and greeted the hundreds of believers gathered inside. Jason McPherson made his way to the stage and handed the song list to the musicians and singers gathered onstage.
“Hey, what’s up with this song list?” one of the choir members asked. “We never do these songs. Trying something new?”
“George Johnston put this list together; kind of a last minute thing. I think he made some really good choices. My list just didn’t feel right this morning.”
