Oh, the smell from the kitchen was fabulous! I was just putting the last of the icing on the carrot cake when the boys came in announcing they had all of the balloons blown up and had tied them to the coral fence. The streamers were gently blowing in the wind. They had placed the big sign saying, “Happy Birthday Mandy, One Year Old Today.” strategically so everyone could see it.
JoJo proudly emptied her shopping bag on the dining room table and declared, “We have party hats, blow-ups, even matching tablecloth, cups, plates and napkins.”
Barney and the boys were setting up the picnic table outside. Some of the people had already arrived and brought Little Miss Mandy a gift. The grass was so green and lush. The cherry bushes were in full bloom, the pictures would be beautiful.
Jack and Leeanna had come. Jack had brought his guitar. “What was a party without music?”
Leeanna exclaimed as she smiled at the cake that had one large carrot as a candle.
“Oh Mom, the icing is wonderful,” JoJo declared as she sheepishly licked off icing from her fingers.”
“Is Mandy ready” I questioned.
“I just finished brushing her beautiful blonde hair. Her big brown eyes are sparking with anticipation. She’s all ready, “ JoJo said as she held the kitchen door open for me as I took the 3 layer carrot cake to the picnic table.
“Leeanna, “How about grabbing the other carrot cake for me? “ I suggested as I walked out the door.
Derrell and Barney had saddled her up. She wore her new pink bridal and reins. They had even placed a beautiful pink flower in her halter from the rose of Sharon tree.
I stood back and watched her as she pranced towards the party table. Her mother, Star, was nervously watching her baby as she left the coral.
As she approached the table I took her reins and kissed her on the nose. She whinnied and proceeded to the table. She had spotted her carrot cake and the prize carrot candle, one of her favorite foods.
We all laughed as Mandy buried her nose in the cake and came up with frosting on her nose just like any other one year old.
I found myself thinking of the many cherished moments she had given me. My Buckskin beauty was growing up. She seemed to be walking in slow motion as my mind wondered to her pulling down the saddle blanket and making me know she wanted one on too. She was only three months old then but she wanted to be like all the other horses. I had tied it around her and let her go for her first walk that day. If horses could talk she would have bragged on herself a little that day.
I could hardly keep from crying as I watched all the neighbors so lovingly gather around her and sing Happy Birthday. She shook her head up and down as if she understood the importance of this day. I’m not sure what she was saying but the memories bring smiles to my heart to this day some fourteen years later.
With tears of joy I swallowed and radiated the thanks for the gift of my Little Buckskin filly, my Miss Mandy.
