As I pondered over this topic, I asked myself, “Why is Christmas day so unique, so different than any other day?” “Why does it have such n impact on people throughout the world?” I have lived in three different continents, and have seen how this day affects people in three different ways, as there is no other day like it!
It is a time of thanksgiving and celebration, of joy and hope for all those who trust and believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. They recognize that He is the reason for the season and without Him, Christmas would be meaningless!
Then it is viewed as a time for celebration by many of the world’s population, a time for giving and receiving, a time for family and friends – leaving the past behind and bridging the gap. Yet for others, it is just another time to party, just another holiday. It is celebrated without knowing the reason as it is so commercialized, and as people chose not to believe in the birth of Jesus Christ and the reason for His birth.
On the other hand, it is a time for great sadness for many – as people tend to remember loved ones that have passed away, feeling lonely and sad, void without hope and understanding. As I have worked for a number of years on a psychiatric unit, I have witnessed the pain that this day arouses for so many, as their minds are still in bondage to the past, and they fail to acknowledge and accept the hope of this gift that God has given so freely to us.
But if we all reflect on this day and all that it truly encompasses, we will come to understand Christmas in a totally different light! And the outward expression of this day will become an inward manifestation of what it is all about!
Christ: Jesus Christ encompasses all that that Christmas is about.
Healing: He came to bring healing to all.
Redemption: He came to redeem man & restore the fellowship between God & man.
Inner peace: He gives a peace that transcends all understanding.
Salvation: His free gift offered to all mankind.
Transformation: He transforms our lives by His Spirit.
Mercy: He demonstrates His mercy towards all of us without measure.
Atonement: He was born to pay the price for all of our sins.
Salvation: The greatest gift for anyone to receive at Christmas is Jesus Christ.
