Oh,
Where
did you put
the tree of life?
My God where did
you put it? Where did
you put the tree of knowledge
of good and evil; where is it? Are they
both in Eden still, and we simply cannot get in?
Or have you placed them into time, disguised in symbols
or
skin?
It
Seems
to me, that
they appeared,
yet I’ve looked all
around. It seems to
me, they once were here,
for what was lost was found.
Mysteries passed down through
time, sometimes need a razor. Occam,
help me find the trees, grant me a simple
favor. Question to answer a question, seems
quite fitting enough. How do two trees stand in one
center?
Doesn’t
seem so tough.
How,
just how,
is that to help me,
solve this complex riddle?
All that helps me see, my guide,
is that both were in the middle. Wait,
that’s it!
Thank
you
mentor.
Impossible!
Having two trees in
one center! If there’s two,
side by side, both cannot be there.
It’s either or, can’t be both. Wait, I must
take
care.
Sir
Occam,
I thank you,
but you’ve led
my mind astray.
Scripture says both
were in the middle I will
not be your prey. Instead I’ll
pray unto the Lord, asking him for
rest. This mystery requires no answer
(of course).
It’s just an
ancillary quest.
Father,
Son, and
Holy Ghost,
Triune three in
one. If it be your
will, help me to see
how this was done. Two
trees - both in the center, doesn’t
sound like two yet one. Surely one and
one’s still two, and it’s not a matter of how
I
sum.
Hmm,
two trees
springing into
life on two sides
of one stream. The
ground’s translucent;
wonderful, how beautiful,
what a scene! The first one
a mixture, seems to me, of apple,
cherry, and peach. The second is a
two-branched palm, its fruits way out
of
reach
The
tops, the
crowns, what’s
that one tree doing?
Yeah, the mix with the
fruit that blinks, like Christmas
tree lights, dull then bright, I can feel
it, the tree, the tree, it thinks! Its branches
are seizing that other one, whose fruit stays
bright as gold - reaching, grabbing, bringing it in,
the second tree now it beholds. Scraping, scratching,
ripping the trunk, bark is flying ‘round. Stop this, Lord!
At least close my ears, I cannot bear the sound, Watch out!
Oh no, its crown has arched, it’s pierced through the other’s top,
A circle of blinking lights affixed, okay Lord, make it stop! A horrifying
crack (straight through two branches); those lights, their pace has quickened. Take
it easy, will you God? I didn’t ask to become sickened. No! Enough, enough, enough, Lord!
No, no, not the roots.
Not another crack,
NOOOOOOOOOOO!
It’s dimmed the golden fruits.
Ok,
okay,
please stop
now, Lord. I get it,
there’s no need for showing.
The palm tree’s fruits soon fade to
black, then a stab, then sap goes flowing.
I get it, I get it, please have mercy. I cannot bear a
second more. I’m sorry for what we did to you, the whole
thing
I abhor
I
Thank
you Lord,
for answering
my questions: how
two can also be one,
and how they both were
in the middle, oh, and for
everything you’ve done. You
didn’t have to be so violent, it makes
me fear to ask - but I must know, so please
be kind, and don’t take me to task. I’m thankful
for these revelations, but there’s something else I’m
needin’. Can you just tell me where to find, those first two
trees
from
Eden?
Are
they both
in Eden still,
and we simply
cannot get in? Or
have you placed them
into time, disguised in symbols
or
skin?
Author’s note: Submitted on Good Friday, 2007.
The poem is suggesting that the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil is not only the cross Jesus was crucified on, but the Father as well; and that the Tree of Life is Jesus, his Son. (Triune God, two trees [here meaning Persons] and a stream [Spirit].)
