Topic: Craft (as in handcraft) (02/08/07)
Our God is a craftsman. He created the earth and all that is in it – the mountains, oceans, seas, and all creatures that inhabit the earth. He made Adam and Eve from matter of the earth. He still crafts each of us – that is why we are uniquely and wonderfully made. No two people are exactly alike; even identical twins usually have at least one small difference in their demeanor or physical appearance. Craftsmen have existed since, and before, time began.

The Apostle Paul made tents for his livelihood. After he met Jesus on the road to Damascus, he probably still worked at his tent making when time allowed. Brothers, James and Simon (Peter) were fishermen until Jesus called them to follow Him and become fishers of men.

In our contemporary world, it seems there is an unwritten rule that to be called a craftsman, one must be an expert in his chosen field or craft. Do we have to create a touchable object, something concrete, to be labeled a craftsman? What about singers, dancers, actors/actresses and others whose craft is to entertain? In this respect, our Lord Jesus was a craftsman. He was a teacher, healer, miracle worker and a preacher (rabbi). He still is great at all of these crafts.

Doctors, nurses, waitresses, beauticians and others all provide services. If they are good at their craft, word soon gets around. They are in demand; word-of-mouth is the best advertising for the crafts involved in service. In consideration of the above, when people heard of Jesus healing lepers and cripples and raising the dead to life, a multitude soon followed wherever He was teaching and preaching. They often brought their afflicted loved ones and friends to be healed

A true craftsman then, is one who creates a physical object, performs a service for, or entertains others. He must also perform his craft with expertise and genuine caring that it is his best work. It is also helpful if one enjoys or even loves his craft, which will motivate the craftsman to bring the work to perfection.

Writing is also a craft, and we do create tangible objects such as books, stories, poems, articles, essays and more. Are we all working to hone our craft to perfection? Are we striving to be more like Jesus?

Yes, and amen. I am 'craft illiterate' when it comes to handicrafts but if I worked at it I could make something! How much better to pursue the areas God has designed for me- I need to be reminded to 'craft' my calling - thank you

It is also helpful if one enjoys or even loves his craft, which will motivate the craftsman to bring the work to perfection.

This part has me thinking of the work God does on us to bring us to perfection. The more we enjoy His craft of transforming us, the more motivated He is to continue.
