Receptionist: Hello, you’ve reached Ready Writers’ Writing Helpline, how may we help you today?

Caller: Hello? Yes, I’m afraid I’ve got quite a problem...I don’t know...I think it might already be too late, but John gave me your number and said I should call...

Receptionist: Don’t worry, sir. This helpline specializes in fixing even the most severe problems that a writer can run into. Now what seems to be the problem?

Caller: Well, you see, I was writing my newest story, when suddenly I discovered something horrible.

Receptionist: Oh? And what might that be?

Caller: I...that is...I couldn’t...uh...

Receptionist: Sir, I’m afraid I’m going to have to ask you to calm down. Take a deep breath...

Caller: (inhales deeply)

Receptionist: Good. Now exhale...

Caller: (exhales)

Receptionist: Alright. Now, what did you discover as you were writing?

Caller: It was my Muse...somehow...I don’t know, it just...vanished.

Receptionist: Don’t worry, sir. Here at Ready Writers’ Writing Helpline, we have some of the greatest M.I.D.’s on staff.

Caller: Uh...M.I.D.’s?

Receptionist: Muse and Inspiration Detectives. I’ll transfer you over to one right now.

Caller: Thank you very much.

(Dial tone rings for a few moments.)

Detective: Hello, this is Detective Kirke speaking. What seems to be the problem?

Caller: It’s my Muse, Detective. I seem to have misplaced it somewhere and I can’t write my newest story without it.

Detective: Alright, Mister...

Caller: Oh, uh, Lewis.

Detective: Mr. Lewis. Well Mr. Lewis, what kind of story are you writing?

Caller: Fantasy.

Detective: (chuckles) That explains it. Those fantasy-type Muses are a rascally bunch. But they’re also some of the easiest to find after misplacing them. Tell me, Mr. Lewis, when was the last time you remember seeing your Muse?

Caller: Hmm...I remember coming back from the store a few evenings ago. My Muse was with me then. I had a lot of packages in my hand, and the snow on the ground made it slippery out. I couldn’t quite tell where I was going and -- well -- I bumped into a lamp post and fell down. I gathered all my packages up and left, but...I don’t remember having my Muse with me after that.

Detective: Well Mr. Lewis, I think I know where your Muse is.

Caller: Really, Detective?! Where can I find it?

Detective: Just go back to the lamp post. It’s as simple as that. Your Muse will be waiting for you there, I’m sure of.

Caller: Oh, thank you Detective! I don’t know how I’ll ever be able to repay you!

Detective: No problem, the pleasure’s all mine.

Caller: I know what I’ll do! I’ll name one of my characters after you.

Detective: (laughs) Alright, Mr. Lewis, if you insist.

Caller: Oh, I do. Thank you again, Detective.

Detective: You’re welcome. Have a good day now, and good luck with that story of yours.

Ditto Jan's comment, "clever idea"...but it needs an ending? You've left your reader dangling! First rule of writing is to satisfy your reader!! However...great dialogue and I repeat "Clever Idea"!

PS: I'd hate to be the Receptionist and have to answer the phone with that Tongue Twister..."Ready Writers' Writing Helpline"...try it! Wow. lol

Fun piece! Would this be a reference to that wonderful apologist and writer of children's books (a new movie of which came out recently)? Do I get a gold star??? ;)

ANYHOW - I definitely enjoyed this one. Such fun little details really make this one.

I liked this clever writing! I would like to read a bit more at the end, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. Good job.

Hilarious! You had me laughing ALL the way through, even my brother liked this. Very creative and orginal. Loved the part with the detective-a bit of mystery is always perfect!

Way kool! Very enjoyable. Liked the format. I like reading a piece where its author wasn't afraid to stretch from the norm. Refreshing and inspiring. God bless.
