Time for the day to start
Twenty-six faces all aglow.
Eyes bright with anticipation,
So let the knowledge flow.
But Andy spilt his milk
And soaked his khaki slacks.
“Looks like he wet his pants!”
Teased Ben, despite the facts.
Cameron began to squirm
Never can sit still-
Needs a note to the see the nurse
And take his tiny amber pill.
Dana didn’t do her math.
“Could I get an extension?
Maybe a week, or so?
I’m under quite a lot of tension.”
My brother had his tonsils out,”
She grumbled with a frown.
We’re out of notebook paper
And my mother’s out of town.
The pencil sharpener roared
To elevate the clatter
Grinding his pencil to the nub-
Eric, oblivious to the matter.
Freddie looked a mess,
as if, perhaps, he skipped the tub-
His hair all disheveled
Needed a firm and bristly scrub.
Gary forgot his lunch money
“Would like to have a loan…
I’m running a little short-
Bought an ice cream cone.”
“Helen broke my pencil!”
yelled the tattletale in the back.
Isaiah confirmed her story,
And frankly, so did Jack.
Kellie, striving hard
To be the teacher’s pet
Announces, “It’s time for gym.”
And in the line they get.
They jostle for position
To lead their crooked line.
Larry slips past Misty
Insisting, “This place is mine!”
Maybe now, there’ll be some time
to do a little planning.
But alas, there was a meeting
About little Nelson Manning.
“Until now, there’s been no trouble
With Nelson all these years
He gets along with others
And is helpful to his peers.”
Just as the meeting closes
Students file into the room,
Strength already fading
But Oh, it’s barely noon.
“Please pass out the crayons.”
But Olivia lost her grip.
The bucket crashed onto the floor
And caused Penny’s feet to slip.
She fell against the teacher’s desk
Knickknacks taking flight,
But little Quinton Curry’s eye
Spied Miss Allen’s plight.
Diving to catch the coffee mug
Just inches from the floor-
He bumped into the principal
Now standing at the door.
What seemed to be a quandary,
Really turned out for the best-
For at that very moment
Came another test.
“I feel sick,” Randy muttered
and promptly threw up on Steve.
Tim had an asthma attack,
Offering no reprieve.
Now, I could continue on
With Ursla, Vivian, and Wes
Or Xavier from Russia
Whose words one has to guess.
We could speak of Yancy’s vice-
Kleptomania, “Can’t help myself.”
Always something’s missing
From Miss Allen’s shelf.
But maybe clever little Zoe
Has already said it best
“Teacher, we love you-
And because of you we’re blessed.”
