false prophet,
blasphemer,
brute beast,
loved the wages of wickedness…
Rebuked by a donkey
who spoke with a man’s voice -
restrained the prophet’s madness.
An ordinary donkey
with an unimaginable mission,
an unsung hero of sorts.
Left naked,
beaten,
half-dead,
passed by on the roadside
until a Samaritan approached,
bearing bandages,
carrying oil and wine,
willing to tend to his wounds…
Placed him on a donkey
to take him to the inn.
An ordinary donkey
with a particular purpose,
an unsung hero of sorts.
Jesus approached Jerusalem
on a road covered with cloaks,
lined with palm branches…
On the back of a donkey’s colt,
entered the city.
Adoring voices raised,
Hosanna in the highest!
An ordinary colt
carried a king,
an unsung hero of sorts.
A donkey spoke
to rebuke one who led others astray,
a leader of evil.
A donkey available
to carry a wounded man -
an important player
in a well-known parable
we endeavor to emulate.
A donkey’s colt
ridden on by David’s descendant,
Royalty,
Redeemer.
Ordinary donkeys
performed pertinent tasks -
unsung heroes.

I couldn't help but think about other aspects of God's creation that seem "ordinary" but have specific roles to play for His Kingdom. This is a factual and encouraging recitation that brings me into an expectant state of mind.
Oh, and I liked the repetition of the last line in the first 3 stanzas..."an unsung hero of sorts."
