“You complete nut-case ! Why did you have to come tooled up with that overgrown penknife ?
I know it had been a crazy week, we’d all been elated and threatened in unequal measures. Even the boss seemed to lose his cool. Emotions were running high, tempers stretched.
But why the knife ? It was a celebration, not a gang fight, and anyway I thought you’d grown out of that hot-temper phase. You’re a man for heaven’s sake not a teen-ager.
I was so tired – we all were, we’d slipped, unintentionally, into a few moments of sleep. The few wines with the meal hadn’t helped. That “I’ll scratch your brain out” dryness behind the eyes had kicked in with steel studs. We should’ve just scarpered when the police showed up at the gate, probably would have if we’d had our wits about us. But then, I suppose, the boss would have stayed there anyway.
I notice you picked on the dumpy one with the scarlet face. Shorty: belly of a whale, and legs that looked like they’d been surgically added on as an afterthought. Nice choice, he wasn’t going catch you when you high-tailed it.
Where’d you kept that blade ? I’m amazed that you’d not spiked yourself before then, or that Judas when he showed up.
But an ear ? What was that all about for goodness sake – bad aim or token gesture ? Good job the boss was there to fix it. How come Lop-ear didn’t chase you for doing it ? It was as if only you, I and the boss knew it had happened. Even Lop-ear seemed not to have noticed his temporary loss ! I suppose the qualifications for temple police has to include lack of feeling -maybe you should apply.
He was something else, our boss. Pull up the net Peter, let’s call it a night. There’s a guy waving from the shore – looks sort of familiar.”
