Topic: Fire-fighter (10/05/06)
Complacent,
sinful thoughts sneak in.
Unconcerned
where this may lead,
careless, distracted -
it isn’t that bad.
DECEIVED!

Flammable indifference,
The Fire makes a subtle entrance.
Single spark -
unnoticed.
Soul set aflame.

The Fire
ignites a grudge,
kindles conceit,
fosters coals of contempt.
Soul transforms from vulnerable to vengeful,
preoccupied to pompous,
oblivious to vicious.
Resentment roars,
bitter words burn the tongue,
stench of spitefulness suffocates.
TRAPPED!

Flicker turns to flame,
embers to inferno,
spreading wildly,
singeing all in its path,
scorching unsuspecting victims.
HOPELESS!

The Fire cannot be fought alone!
Panting, pleading
for relief from fervent heat!
Longing for Liquid healing.

Drops begin to fall,
stifle The Fire,
smother the flames,
suppress its force.

The Water
cleanses carelessness,
washes unwise choices,
eradicates aloof attitude,
expunges jealousy,
squelches sin.
HOPE RESTORED!

The Water
gushes forth,
obliterates the blaze,
overpowers its passion,
stamps out its smolderings,
saturates the smoke.

Snuffed out,
The Fire is left choking -
no breath,
no air to fan the flames.
Suffocated,
The Fire surrenders.
The Water conquers!
VICTORY!

Great job of using word sounds to make this free verse poem lyrical! I love how you used present tense to make it come alive on the page too! Great job dealing with a tough topic for poets!!

I saw some significant parallels to a soul crying out and finally finding relief from so many sins of the natural man. Finding relief in the baptism that conquers the fire and brings victory and finally relief! I may be way off base about the meaning of this beautiful poem, but that's the beauty of poetry; it means something different to each reader. Bravo my friend!
