Gaining confidence one day, I decided to plant gardens of rose bushes and wildflowers. Purchases in hand, I began digging and planting. Finally complete, I stepped back and saw a bunch of greenery and seedlings that needed watering.
In the gardens when I toiled, He was there.
After watering the plants, I promptly forgot about them as I became involved in my own life. Working, church activities, family gatherings, and the grandchildren kept me busy. Occasionally, I would water the plants, but mostly I ignored them

Rains came upon the ground and watered the plants. One day, I saw that my neglected gardens were full of weeds, so I spent an afternoon pulling them up. Satisfied with my work, I sat on the grass and enjoyed the colors and smells of the flowers.

Dahlias, daisies, and roses grew in abundance in my gardens all summer long. I seldom watered anything, but these flowers grew and thrived. I plucked a few from their stems and enjoyed the colors in a vase on the table. I hastily went about my daily life, still neglecting the gardens.

Evening fell one day and the setting sun shone a light upon the flowers. I looked closely at the roses and was surprised at the fragileness of the petals. I sat upon the ground and tenderly cared for them, piling up the broken and fractured pieces. Much later, I went into the house and put the petals in a bowl. The smell of roses was a delight and permeated the air.

Nearing exhaustion one day, I raced past my gardens into the house. Like my clouded thoughts, snow fell heavily and covered the ground. The gardens were the furthest thing from my mind as I languished away the winter months, bruised and fractured from a hectic life.

Spring arrived again and my gardens began to bloom. I picked a rose and looked at its delicate petals, fresh and whole, unlike last year’s broken pieces. I became conscious of a change in me, feeling a calmness I had not known before. I was no longer fraught with frenzy. During the winter months, Jesus had toiled in the gardens of my soul, watering me with His grace and mercy. He is there to nurture and guide me. I trust in Him.
