The back door slammed, and four little feet pounded across the old wooden floors.
“Gammy!” our two grandchildren chorused, “Can we play in the water?”
It was an early summer day, with birds singing and a soft breeze blowing, the temperature warm enough for water play. “Sure,” I said, “but remember, the water will be cold, even though it’s warm outside. And please, don’t slam the door.”
Preston and Peyton scampered out the door, pulling it shut instead of slamming it this time. I watched from the kitchen window as they collected plastic tubs and connected the sprinkler to the hose. As usual, Preston, the oldest, issued directives, while Peyton, the easy- going one, willingly complied. Soon they were ready for their fun.
Waiting with anticipation for the first wetting to occur, I was rewarded by squeals from both children, “It’s cold!” Then, as their bodies grew accustomed to the icy well water, the squeals turned to giggles and the accompanying pleasant sounds of happy play.
As I watched and listened, I could relate to a definition of the word melody that I had read. Not specifically referring to music, it spoke of ‘sweet or agreeable sound’. That was what I heard as the children’s voices floated through the open window – the harmony, the unity, as they worked together, filling the plastic tubs, and taking turns dashing through the sprinkler’s whirling water.
I smiled in contentment, and I could imagine God doing the same, not just for my grandchildren’s melodic play, but any time his children worked and played together with ‘sweet and agreeable’ sounds.
It’s almost fall now. The plastic tubs are put away, I’m using the hose for watering flowers, and Preston and Peyton have returned to Lithuania, where they and their parents are missionaries. However, like any musical melody I hear, and like, I can call to mind my grandchildren’s summer melody of giggles and happy play, and smile just as contentedly as I did that day.
