As we sat in the counselor's office, my head was pounding. For some reason, my headaches had been getting worse and worse lately, and asprin just wasn't cutting it. I attributed it to the stress of dealing with my husband. He wasn't easy to put up with!
The psychologist, Mary, peered at me over her rimless glasses. "Okay, Sara, we'll start with you. Why are you here?"
That was the question I had been waiting for. I dove in, headfirst, and didn't come up for air for several moments.
"Brad is so inconsiderate! He leaves the toilet seat up, squeezes the toothpaste from the middle, and leaves his socks and underwear lying on the floor! He also snores, chews with his mouth open, puts away the dishes in the wrong cupboards, hangs his coat over a chair instead of putting it in the closet where it belongs, he doesn't wipe his crumbs off the kitchen counter, he leaves his shoes on in the house - hang on a minute - I have a list in my purse." I dug through my purse and pulled out the long list I had made of things I wanted to bring up about Brad. I read through the ones I had missed.
When I finished, I looked up at Mary. "The worst thing is, Mary, that he can't even see that he's being inconsiderate! He's blinded. You know, Jesus came to Earth to heal the blind. That's why I insisted we get counseling. Brad needs to remove the blinders." I grabbed hold of my head to relieve the throb.
"Are you okay, Sara?" Mary asked. "It looks like you're in pain."
"It's this headache. It won't go away. But I'll be fine. So do you think you can help him?" I asked. As I looked at Mary, her face turned to fuzz. "What's happening? Everything's blurry. I can't see."
"Sara," Mary was saying, "I think I know how to help you."
I sighed. Finally! I waited for her to light into Brad, to instruct him on how to be a more considerate husband.
"Ouch. That stung a little," I heard Brad say.
What was going on?
"Okay, Brad. Can you help me over here?" Mary asked. I squinted, trying to make out what was happening.
Suddenly I felt pressure by my eye.
"One, two, three, pull!" Mary said.
The pain was excruciating! It felt like my eye popped right out of my head! I screamed.
In the silence that followed, came conviction. The realization of what had just happened left me speechless.
Everything was clear now. The plank lay on the floor, right next to the speck from Brad's eye.
I had been so focused on Brad's faults that I was unwilling to look at myself. And now that I could see clearly, my husband didn't look so bad after all.
