He inched a little further into the room. A quick furtive look around revealed nothing. An inch more. Another search. A little more and then a longer look. Seemed okay. Besides, the cheese was smelling more and more delicious with each little step. A little more and then... snap!
The claws of the cat, and her nasty teeth, missed him by the smell of her breath. One extra layer of skin on her paws, one extra layer of enamel on those teeth, and this rodent would be dead. Instead he made like greased lightening for the centre of the room. Not for his mouse-hole in the wall, but for the cheese on the kitchen table.
You would think safety would be the first concern. But oh no, not for this whiskery chap. Having risked life and limb to get this far he was not going home empty handed. Not when he also believed he could beat his feline enemy in a fair chase. The cat lost its only hope of victory when it missed on the first jump. The mouse knew he had a little more going for him than the cat. He had more speed, more agility and was small enough to be extra hard to catch. Yes sir... there would be cheese for supper tonight.
A fanciful contest, but one that comes to mind when I think of a real life battle I fight every day. My enemy is like a cat too - a roaring lion that looks for souls to devour. He often goes very close to sinking his fangs into my life and encircling my heart with his claws. But I have an extra edge on him too. My edge is Jesus Christ.
The Anointed One knows the Word of God better than my enemy - and He has promised to bring it to my memory every time I need it. It is this same Word that saves me from snapping teeth and slashing claws - no matter how close they get.
As my Saviour He has already paid in full any payment that the enemy can demand of me - and the blood stains on His Cross are all the receipt I need. As a Risen Sacrifice he has already blazed the way home - and the long, straight narrow road I follow leads nowhere else.
Yes sir. I have an extra edge on that old enemy of mine, because my closest friend made an extra-ordinary payment on my behalf.
And I also refuse to go home empty handed. There are those who are struggling with addictions, pain and grief. I need to share with them the testimony of what Jesus has done for me. There are those who are lost in this world and I need to show them my road map home; so that they too can find their way. And there are some sad, lonely folk who need to be introduced to my best friend and join the circle of disciples that surround Him.
No! I will not be leaving this place empty handed. I'll be taking a few extra guests home for tea with me.
There'll be cheese on the menu tonight.
