Coiled my neck as a noose;
I never knew
--No one ever knows--
Tied loose
…at first
Barely grazing the skin
…at first
Fastened at the womb
…at first
Years of maturing
Tightened the cords
That I couldn’t see,
So consumed with Me;
Envy’s thread, woven with pride,
Strengthened the cords.
College life wedged between skyscrapers
Where the sun must wrestle
Its way in, stirred sensual senses;
Temptations tied the twine;
Obsessions secured the knots,
Figure eight loops, wet with dew,
Impossible to untie
By unaided human hands.
I didn’t know
This invisible twine,
What I held onto for life
Lowered me. I rappelled
down
down
Toward the hungry flames,
But was numb to its heat.
The organic scent of seared flesh
Was masked by the sweet perfume
Worldly wisdom wore.
I didn’t know
As in a dream,
Rubies rained down
In an avalanche
And buried me. I didn’t mind
Suffocating
Until my eyes opened,
And I called
Out from a desperate heart.
At the right moment,
The Lord grabbed hold
Of that invisible cord
With His scarred hands
And held fast
As the anchor at the cliff summit.
With the same strength
That raised the dead,
He raised me.
I didn’t know how deep
I had descended;
But He knew;
He knew I would accept
His hand offered.
On safe ground,
He loosened the knots
And slipped off what bound
Me to death.
The invisible cords
Dissolved into songs of praise
And released me.
…at last

He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters.
