I can hear her in the hall outside of my room. I quickly lie down and grab my teddy.
She’s opening the door. I put on my most innocent face. She doesn’t need to know that I’ve been plotting this moment all night.
“Good morning, Sweetheart.” She walks in the room. “Did you have a good sleep?”
I garble something back at her, throwing in a “mama” for good measure. She grins at me. She is so easy to please sometimes.
She pulls me out of my bed and holds me close. I can feel the steady beat of her heart through her shirt. She kisses my head. I wait patiently as she prepares the changing station on the floor. In a few moments everything is ready. The moment I’ve been waiting for is finally here. She positions me on the changing pad.
I lie very still, smiling at her and cooing. I want to put her off her guard, and it seems to be working.
“What a good baby.” She says in that over sweet voice she reserves just for me.
I want to smile bigger, but I’m afraid it will give away my game, so I shove my thumb in my mouth to hide my growing amusement. If she only knew what I had planned.
Finally, she frees me from my diaper, and it’s time to act. She takes her hands off of me, and reaches for a new diaper. In one swift movement, I flip over onto my stomach and scoot across the floor.
A hand grabs onto my ankle, and stops my forward movement. She’s too fast for me this time. I’ll have to work on that.
“Where do you think you’re going?” She picks me up and puts me back on the changing pad.
She’s keeping an eye on me now, so I act like I’m going to comply with her agenda. She puts the new diaper underneath of me, positioning it just so. That’s my cue.
I twist from side to side, kicking my feet against the floor, and sliding. I love the slick floors for this trick. Her smile isn’t so big any more, and I know that I’m winning. Every time she almost gets the diaper closed, I wiggle again.
“If you would hold still, we could be done quicker, and you could play.” She says, but her voice isn’t as sweet as before. She doesn’t realize that I’m already playing on of my favorite games.
Somehow she manages to fasten one side of my diaper. I’m not defeated yet. I’ve been practicing this move all night, and I know she’s going to love it. I’m going to have to be fast, or she won’t let me do it.
As she reaches to fasten the other side, I do a quick flip onto my belly and get up on my knees. Then, I slide one knee under my body and sit up. I look over my shoulder in time to see the shocked look on her face, and then the smile spread all the way up to her eyes.
“Look at you!” She squeals and claps her hands. This was the reaction I was hoping for. While she marvels at my new trick, I pull at the half closed diaper. It doesn’t come off as easy as I thought it would. I pull harder, but before I can get it off, she realizes what I am doing and brings me back to the changing pad. With a few quick movements I am now confined inside a diaper again.
She might have won this round, but the game’s not over yet.
While she goes to dispose of my soiled diaper and wash her hands, I stare at a spot on the wall and concentrate. She’ll need to change this diaper when she gets back.
I’m ready for round two; I hope she is.
