Slowly, but surely, however, as moments pass, the reality of our human world supersedes our thoughts of God, His voice fading off into the distance like a dissipating rainbow . . .
Martha Rosemont began her day with honorable intentions, thankful for opportunities to use her God-given talent for His glory. The cantata was scheduled for this evening. She would be singing from Handel’s “Messiah” in front of a sold-out crowd in Time Square, a chance of a lifetime to reach thousands of souls for Him.
ADVANCE TO GO, COLLECT $200
As she loaded the dishwasher with yesterday’s used dishes, Martha practiced her scales, “Do, ray, me, fa, sol, la, te, do’s” bouncing through the air like a juggler’s balls.
“Mom, I can’t find my green socks. Will you help me find them”? nine-year-old Ashlee’s voice interrupted Martha’s voice exercises.
“Do, ra, me . . . I’m sorry, honey, I have to rehearse,” she slammed the filled dishwasher door with one foot as she gathered up a music-filled briefcase with one hand and fluffed her coiffure with the other and purposely walked through the main floor hallway.
Downcast Ashlee almost missed the school bus, settling for a pair of brown socks she found in the overflowing hamper. Oblivious to her daughter’s dilemmas, Martha gracefully arranged her designer jacket over her shoulders “just so” and backed her luxury car out of their townhouse garage.

Martha fiddled with the background accompaniment CD, trying to insert it into the dashboard slot. She slid out of the driveway effortlessly, as smooth as an eel slipping into the sea.
“BAM!,” Martha’s singing came to a screeching halt, competing with the tail lights shattering glass.
“Drat! I forgot about the neighbor’s new cement columns!”
The damage was noticeable, but she didn’t have time to make the necessary calls and to fill out accident reports.
“Maybe they’ll think UPS did it,” Martha salved her conscience as she sped away.

Four hours later, Martha breathlessly arrived at the concert hall. She had to park in a reserved handicapped space, but, as prima donna of the performance, she was certainly entitled to some preferential treatment!
PAY EACH MEMBER OF THE BOARD $50
“Please help me, Father, to bring honor to Your name with this voice you have given me. May it feed the people’s souls with Your truths,” was Martha’s humble pre-operatic plea.
CONGRATULATIONS! YOU HAVE WON FIRST PLACE IN A CONTEST
Two hours later, the grand finale echoed through the starry night air like the dissipating scent of a lady’s perfume. Martha’s heart swelled, her eyes tearing with emotion as she gracefully bowed. Not long afterwards, she made her way to the parking garage, only to discover a police officer placing a ticket on the windshield of her car.
“Excuse me, Officer, I must have left my handicapped placard at home,” purposely limping the last few steps.
“Why, thank you for pointing that out, ma’am. Actually, I was ticketing your for busted tail lights,” scribbling a second ticket.
PAY TWICE THE AMOUNT ENTITLED
Arriving back home much later than anticipated, Martha entered the house on tiptoe to the welcoming aroma of freshly-brewed coffee and a covered meal on the stovetop. Her heart was warmed by her husband’s usual thoughtfulness. A note propped up on the kitchen counter written in Ashlee’s printing claimed her attention next:
“Thanks, Mom, for finding my green socks. Daddy says you found them for me.”
GET OUT OF JAIL FREE
We climb into bed and hastily say our prayers, guilty as charged for our wrongs at day’s end, asking God’s forgiveness for mistakes and downright sins we have committed along life’s pathway. We close our eyes and determine, by God’s grace, to right the wrongs we have done and finally fall asleep in His merciful arms, thanking him for the “GET OUR OF JAIL FREE” card He has given to an undeserving us.
After all, tomorrow is another day.
