How many steps from Heaven's high gate,
Did the Savior have to take,
To the lowly Bethlehem manger,
For His lost creation's sake?
He stepped down from His glorious throne,
To the earth that He had made.
A wee, small babe on a bed of hay,
In a stable He was laid.
The Son of God counted not the cost,
As He laid His glory down.
He was born to bear a wooden cross,
And to wear a thorny crown.
How many steps, walked in three short years,
With disciples by His side?
Jesus shared the message of God's love,
So we might with Him abide.
From Nazareth to Jerusalem,
To the Sea of Galilee,
Jesus lived a life that knew no sin,
That the Father we would see.
Deep in His heart, He had always known,
He was born on earth to die.
“Holy Father, not My will but Thine,”
Was His obedient cry.
How many steps up Golgotha's hill,
Bent beneath a cross of shame?
Bowing Himself to the Father's will,
Saving those who mocked His name.
Did the crowd watching the Savior die,
Understand the act they saw?
God's spotless and sacrificial Lamb,
Whose death would fulfill the Law.
He died, then on the third day He rose,
To redeem the souls of men.
The blood He shed so willingly,
Was a covering for sin.
“How many steps from my heart to His?”
My soul cries from deep inside.
And what must I do now to be saved,
From all my sin and pride?
I am a sinner, I must confess,
In Jesus, I must believe,
And know that forgiveness is a gift,
That each person must receive.
Dear God, I bow in grateful prayer,
I'm not worthy, yet I see,
Of the many steps that You required,
Jesus took them all for me.
