where Patrick drove the snakes away
and Strongbow took the land.
I cannot find them, these Lanahans
Whose blood is mixed with mine.
Why didn’t they tell their story?
Two brothers, one a preacher
who had a son, who had a daughter.
Now here I am.
A legacy of faith unsung.
I imagine them crouched among
the rocks on the shore of Donegal,
pooling their wages for the fare,
then looking out across the water,
longing to be here.
Two brothers, one a preacher

Now here I am.
“Across the sea there is good land,
and work and a fighting chance.”
Did that make it easier to say goodbye
to family, friends, a heritage?
Did they find the men they longed to be,
the way of life they planned?
Two brothers, one a preacher

Now here I am.
From the green Isle to the desert west,
through unknown trials and joys.
I look across to their homeland
and long to know the reasons,
but nothing is known, or passed along;
So many spellings on the manifests, but
Two brothers, one a preacher
told his son, who told his daughter,
about the great I AM.
