A viola sang soft notes
Rippling over rows of familiar faces,
sailing across stained glass windows
like the sweet smell of lilacs.
I waited like a nervous penguin,
swaying side to side.
And I saw her,
an angel flowing in white satin
trimmed with scalloped lace;
a circle of baby’s breath crowned
endless auburn waves;
my stomach spiraled to my feet;
our eyes locked,
and she smiled.
A prima ballerina
sashayed down the aisle.
Before God we promised
to love
‘til death
with sincere hearts.
But our vows in lace and tie
crashed into reality
before love could root
and live.
What happened
to our hearts that skipped
at the sight of one another?
To the perfect couple?
Could we forget the years,
Could we forget that day
of promise and hope?
Can bitter thoughts spoken
be blamed for hearts broken?
Or did trials snag a thread
that unraveled our home
letting tension crawl through the cracks?
Could you hear the silence too?
But we promised God
who keeps his promises,
who said he’d never leave us
nor forsake us.
We prayed;
He answered...
If we’re patient,
hold our eyes at the moment
and trust Him,
He can mend each tear,
one sincere stitch at a time.
The Bridal Chorus hummed
in our hearts again
as we renewed our vows
to love
‘til death.
