We tried everything. At first we ignored the encroachment, but that is never a good policy. As they grew in numbers they became aggressive. No longer content to stay in their own compounds, they began to send spies into our territory. They conducted night raids and carried off our supplies while we slept. We were so repulsed by the very sight of them that we were reluctant to acknowledge that the problem was building.

We knew this had happened in other times and in other places. To the best of our knowledge though, no one knows how to stop them permanently. We share information with agents of other targeted regions but the solutions are always ineffective.

Identify and kill the spies, some suggest. They are such a determined and devious lot, they have an inexhaustible supply of trained recruits to send. Set up barriers at their point of entry. Even if we know where they are coming from and how they are getting through our lines of defense, no blockade stops them for long. Set traps and arrest them at the site where you think they are likely to attack. You win a few battles this way, but before long their legions swarm over undefended turf you never thought would be of any interest to them.

They are an ancient culture, an aggravation since the beginning of time. Hot, moist climates or the dark still corners of our province, it matters not – they cannot be sealed off and destroyed without destroying what we hold dear, so a bomb is out of the question.

Finally we admit that sacrifices will have to be made. It will take time and patience, but it seems to be the only way to stop this army of invaders who are intent on building up their own nation at our expense.

We employ an old technique of war, burning the fields. We strip the land bare of all they value, everything they seek. We leave nothing for them, and that works. They leave us alone for awhile, until we become forgetful and leave a half eaten bowl of fruit in the sink and the ants return. Then we make our peace with the pests, sponge them off the sink, drown them in the drain and look forward to the first winter freeze.
