she stood - shocked
too many days indoors
too ill to care
her hair had matted to one side
“Death”
she whispered to the mirror
“I look like Death”
She didn’t want to look like death
nor think of it...
Today she felt better
She showered, tamed her hair
donned her red, gold and aqua sweater
to bring color back into her world
Color always made her feel better
She stepped outside
wanting to walk
hungering for movement
to feel alive again
have the song of the outdoors
the beat of her feet
replace the pounding
that had assaulted her head for days
She wanted to feel warmth
other than the angry hot fever
that had raged and warred
battling within
her cold shivering body
until the antibiotics
had finally brought peace
She faced the sun
welcomed its touch
breathed deeply - with delight
laughed - danced
praised God for the joy
of feeling
the sunrays’
astronomical arms
reaching across the universe
to hug her
wrap her in warm
feelings of well being
She was so glad she felt better
She broke into song
as she strolled
toward her favorite coffee shop
thinking
the street seemed busy
but she didn’t worry
as usual
she would wind her way
inside the shop
to the back corner
quietly
slip in and sit and sip
and amicably argue
ideology
with the regulars
How wonderful she felt better
Like new flora
taking root in the desert
she had begun a new poem
ponderings of purpose
to share - sincerely
hoping
Abraham was there
to debate
Shalom
was her last word
as
the
bomb
EXPLODED
It was not a good day to feel better
