“How outlandishly the goldfinch female’s dressed?”
Sighed her mate from perch up higher in the tree,
“What she’s wearing doesn’t matter much to me.”
Said she, “The male must think that he’s a prize;
To see such brilliant color hurts my eyes.”
She tweeted on how gaudy they appear,
Not sensing there might be a goldfinch near.
Although her mate grew tired of her tirade,
With words of comfort, wisdom he displayed:
“While our appearance may not cause sensation,
We’re still a vital part of God’s creation.
“God said that not a one of us would fall,
But He would be nearby to see it all.
“Your gray and brown are beautiful to me,
And not another sings as prettily.”
At that, she fluttered down to gather seed
For hungry babies in the nest to feed.
A goldfinch, never pausing in his flight,
Bestowed upon her head a crown of white.
