If you go to the grocery store or stop by a market stand, for a small price you can treat yourself to the delectable sweetness of fruit. You might even have an apple tree, grapevine or some other variety from which you can pick fresh fruit to enjoy.
To obtain the fruit of the Spirit one must make a choice. There is no grocery store or market stand where they are for sale, nor is there a vine from which to pluck these remarkable fruits. The choice, simple; Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and be transformed into a creature that lives after the Spirit instead of the flesh. The fruit of the Spirit will be absent in our lives if we do not choose to follow the Source from whom the fruit of the Spirit comes. God gave to us His Word that we might know what the fruits are. They are always in season, always the same, never changing, and compared with the fruits of the vine, there are not so many. This should make it easy to remember them. Let’s see…there is: Love, Joy, Peace, Longsuffering, Gentleness, Goodness, Faith, Meekness, and Temperance.
If we do not purpose to walk after the Spirit then we purpose to walk after the flesh. The fruit that we yield in our lives, when inspected, is found to demonstrate what our purpose is.
There is a lot to discover about the fruit of the vine. Not only does it taste good, but it is beneficial to our flesh in its ability to nourish and sustain our physical body. The fruit of the Spirit is beneficial too, in fact, it is absolutely vital to nourish and sustain our spirit.
Oranges, pears, watermelon, strawberries, blackberries, the list goes on and we all have our favorites, but they are all temporary. Just as the fruit of the vine rots, so will our flesh pass away. Both are of this world. The fruit of the Spirit does not spoil; it grows and transforms who we are. It makes us more like our everlasting God.
It is wonderful that God in His wisdom has given us the fruit of the vine. It could be looked upon as a counterpart in the physical to that in the spiritual. So, the next time you sink your teeth into an apple, don’t sit and wonder if it was an apple that Eve partook of. Instead, remember the fruit her disobedience yielded. Beware of the path she put us on. Purpose to walk after the Spirit, He will guide you on a different path, and the fruit that is to be had is quite remarkable. In fact, you will attract others because His fruit is beautiful
