we are still best friends,
wiping away all the tears
and making amends when amends can be made,
arguing our stand, whatever it was,
sharing our doubts,
defending our land against all our foes,
always, always,
there for each other,
through good times and bad
and then back again.
after all these years,
we are growing closer and closer at heart,
probably because we were seldom apart,
drinking our coffees, stirring our lemon into our teas,
remembering our days,
rethinking our ways,
forgiving our past and braving our future
and only half-believing what each other might say.
after all these years,
we’ve grown wistfully old,
like grey weathered oaks by the river I’m told,
mossy and misty,
with little more to do than cast a soft, mellow shade.
now that the ending is near,
we have both turned to gold,
for we’ve grown deep in our years,
you and I, old friend.
we’ve grown deep in our years, you and I, old friend.

I liked the word picture of "nothing to do but cast shade".
