You see—the world is full of little miracles.
I remember as a child our family had a magic card table. On Thanksgiving the whole family would get together and out they would haul the old magic table. 4 of us would lace our hands flat on the table. Each would touch the hand of another and with deep concentration one leg of the card table would rise up off the ground and be ready to answer questions; 1 rap on the floor for yes and 2 raps for no.
The table usually held 3 children and an adult. I was often the boy child. The girls loved the table. They had hundreds of questions on their future, their future husband, their future children, and whether they would be rich or not. The table had the answers.
I always believed it was faked. I mean there was an adult at the table. It was a trick somehow. I’d sneak a peek under the table trying to catch what the adult was doing to make the table leg rise up and jump up and down. I never did catch them doing anything.
Then one Thanksgiving day, I was a little older, but still sitting at the table with the girls for hours and I suddenly noticed something. I noticed there were only 4 children at the table. The adult had finally fled and the table still worked. I was stunned.
You see—I understood then that there was magic in the world beyond our understanding.
One day, many years later, my teenaged daughter decided that life was too hard and she wanted to be in Heaven with Jesus where the streets were paved with gold. She left a beautiful note and took her own life.
A few days after the service, I sat staring out my home office window. It took a while for me to stop staring, focus, and notice a black cat sitting across the yard staring back at me through the window. This black cat had a white blaze on its chest and one paw with a white tip that looked like it had been dipped into a white ink bottle.
My daughter when she was small had her own pet. It was the exact match of the cat staring back at me through my window.
You see—I knew then that there was indeed life after death. She had found her cat and sent him to me to tell me she was okay.
In the end, I got old. Many years went by and I watched those I loved grow old with and around me. They died and I saw many things, experienced many things, and understood many things.
You see—I learned that the only thing that matters, the only thing you need to understand, the only thing deep inside of you that you know is truth, is that the Christ is a part of the world, a part of you, a part of me, and we are one with the I AM.
And—You See.
