In the rustling Autumn leaves,
What it was, I did not know--
Barren hearts cannot conceive.
Gazing from a hilltop
I should’ve felt Your nudge,
But rusty locks prevent the doors
Of hardened hearts to budge.
All alone I claimed defeat
While I walked a windswept shore,
Thunderous waves and salty tears
Blocked Your voice within the roar.
What happened next I can’t explain
But a shout came from a distance.
I jerked my head and there he was,
Fighting for his own existence.
A child appeared from nowhere
And bobbed helplessly at sea,
His panicked pleas for rescue
Triggered instincts born in me.
I splashed through angry waters
Till I grabbed his sinking hand,
I don’t know how I did it
But I got us both to land.
“Didn’t think that I could swim
Within that fearsome ocean.”
“Maybe you relied on faith.”
I shivered with emotion.
This little boy had wisdom
Well beyond his years,
He had a way of speaking
That evaporated fears.
He took my hand, “Time to go,”
Then said, “I’ll lead the way.”
Something strange was happening--
What it was, I couldn’t say.
Here’s the clincher, listen up,
He disappeared, he was no more.
Literally he just vanished
As we walked that windswept shore.
I did not comprehend at
First the miracle unveiled.
Confused, I thought myself insane
But then God’s plan prevailed.
‘Cause I reached out to another
As my Father beckoned me,
Rusty locks fell from a heart
That had denied His deity.
My deafness has been overcome--
Faithfulness, now my shield.
What is it friend you need to hear,
What is it you must yield?
