Choices have consequences, consequences affect circumstances, circumstances have conversations.
“ I love you, Jane. ”
“ I love you, John. ”
“ Our life, Jane, I’m talking about our whole life ahead, it’s ours to mold as we will. ”
“ Hurry up, will you, it’s not everyday your daughter graduates. ”
“ There is no way we can afford that size of a down payment, with our limited budget. ”
“ Sorry, John, sales are slow . . . I’ve got to let you go. ”
“ Oh, my brain’s too slow, I’m too old for this . . . retraining stuff. ”
“ Mom, Dad, I’ve got something to tell you. ”
“ Between women’s monthly and women’s menopause, I’ll be a man next time. ”
“ How can we retire, with not nearly enough insurance, no real pension, and no bank savings. ”
“ Lord, we’re responsible for our choices, like it or not, but we don’t know where to go or what to do. ”
“ My hair is going grey faster than your head is balding. ”
“ This empty nest syndrome is a nest alright, a nest strictly for the birds. ”
“ I’m so tired all the time, John, and where do all these daily body aches come from. ”
“ You know, women can have a midlife’s crisis, too. ”
“ Oh, I’ve got my share of regrets in life, but my love for you, Jane, is not one of them. ”
“ Ever since your father died, your mother has not adjusted, you need to be there for her, more now. ”
“ Please sit up, dear . . . do you hear me . . . you need to take your pills. ”
“ I love you, Jane. ”
“ I love you, John. ”
In Humbridge Cemetery, of Paxton, Louisiana, USA, is the tombstone of John and Jane Michaels, and those were some of their conversations, now closed.
