Wow, I just found a great deal on DVD players - $9.95. I brought one home, expecting it to work immediately. Instead, I had to call technical support. Here is our telephone conversation.
“Thank you for calling Electronics Unhelpful, located in outer Timbuktu. Our desire is to provide you with a unique telephone experience.”
I was surprised that they actually gave their location. The recording continued, “For Japanese, press 1. For Indonesian, press 2. …. For English, press 9.”
I suppose English could have been a double-digit number, so I was thankful it was only nine. I was hoping for a real person, so I pressed 9.
“Our English speaking agent is busy. Please hold.”
Only one agent? I must have misunderstood, I thought.
After a four minute wait, I heard the recording click back on. “Our English speaking agent is still busy. The expected hold time is 32 days, seven hours, and 24 minutes. If you wish to hold, press 1. If you would like a callback, press 2. Please be aware that you may lose your place in the queue in you choose Option 2. If are you experiencing technical difficulties with your unit, please hold.”
I almost thought about holding, but I didn’t. I pressed 2 and hung up, laughing because I hadn’t entered my telephone number.
The phone conversation made me think about God. What if I wanted to talk to God and had to use the phone? Would I hear, “Thank you for calling God. There are four billion calls ahead of you. Please hold or press two to leave a voice mail.”
I’m so glad that God doesn’t have to use a telephone and that I can speak with Him at any time. I even listen sometimes.
I decided to fix the DVD player. Eight hours later, I gave up and went to the store and bought a DVD player for $59.95. Coming home, I plugged in the DVD player and pressed the power button. It worked! I guess $9.95 wasn’t a deal after all.
Forty-four days later, my telephone rang. “I am calling from Electronics Unhelpful. Did you call us for service?”
I laughed, for I didn’t even know what to say.
