that night
I was a boy
again
camping out at the lake
and my whole family was there
It was a dream
déjà vu
of a real event
A family reunion
one summer
on a cloudless weekend
far in the past and nearly
forgotten
The dream went crazy then
as fever dreams often do
and
as I lay on my back
on the blanket
my bathing suit and I
drying after a cool dip
in the lake
My grandfather brought his chair over
sat it down near me, looked down at me
and began to speak
He said only a few words
picked up his aluminum folding
chair and left
My mother came next
sitting next to me on the blue blanket
taking my hand and looking down at me
with her soft brown eyes.
She repeated the same words
as grandfather
and
got up and left
This was repeated over and over
as my father came next
followed by
of all things
my younger sister
then my aunts and
uncles formed a line
and one by one sat next
to me
repeating the same words
and left
When the last one was finished
talking to me
my fever broke and I
fell into a deep dreamless sleep
I awoke struggling to remember the
words that were said to me
by my long past family
in my dream.
I grabbed my bible
flipping through the pages
and the book opened fully to
these same words…
“And this I pray,
that your love
may abound
yet more and more
in knowledge
and
in all judgments
That you may approve
things
that are excellent;
that ye may be sincere
and without offence
till
the day of
the Christ.”
I looked up from
the verses in Philippians
climbed out of bed
and made ready
for another day
as
President of the United States.
