My younger sister was one of those skydivers. She excitedly came over to where my grandmother and I were waiting, telling us of the pure exhilaration she experienced with that jump. Her favorite moments in the air were what is called free-falling. She explained that free-falling is those few moments between the actual jump from the airplane and the time you pull the rip-cord to open the parachute. She exclaimed that in those moments she felt as though she were floating in the very hands of God, enveloped by His love and presence. She tried to entice me into going on a jump with her. Yeah right!
To say that my sister was adventurous would be an absolute understatement of all time. Her life exuded adventure in every aspect. When we were young children she would climb trees as high as she could get just for the thrill of being up there. She would get on the old Tarzan swing and at the end of the swing out would jump into the pile of leaves below. She did nothing half-heartedly, and excelled in all that she put her mind to do. She left home at the age of 17, moving to Washington D.C. to work for an Admiral in the U.S. Navy Department as a secretary. My sister joined the Naval Reserves at age 19 because she wanted adventure in her life. Adventure seemed to be her middle name.
One Memorial Day, my sister went up in an airplane to do an exhibition jump at some big event. Her excitement about this event, and the preparation for it were very clearly stated in a letter she wrote to our family, as well as the many calls home just prior to it. The thrill in her voice, and written words, expressed the exuberance of exhilaration she was anticipating for this event. Many months of jumps and practice went into the preparation of this very event. She was to participate in an eight man star formation. She was ready for this jump, seasoned with many jumps behind her.
Our family was in church when the news came from a State Trooper who came to inform us that my sister had just been pronounced dead on arrival to the hospital. My sister had her last moment of exhilaration, her final jump and free-fall, her final adventure.
To this day, some thirty years later we do not know what really occurred that day. Many different stories were told about what went wrong, or could have gone wrong. There are two things I do know for certainty. One she is now in the arms of God enveloped in His presence. The second thing is that the ultimate adventure for her became seeing Jesus face to face.
