“That’s it!” I exclaimed. I bent over and planted one huge mommy-sized sloppy kiss on his forehead.
“What’s that for, mom?” he asked wiping away my liquid love with the back of his hand.
“Why, it’s the answer to my prayers,” I answered. Enthusiastically I picked him up and twirled him around the kitchen. “God is so good!”
Puzzled, he grabbed one more cookie, his milk and headed out the backdoor puppy bouncing at his heels. My gaze followed him as I was once again amazed at God’s mysteriously practical ways.
As a young mom with five kids under the age of ten, money was tight. My hubby, a financial genius, faithfully budgeted ever penny to see that our needs and some wants were always met. The thought of burdening him with my latest project seemed selfish.
For the past eight years we had been active members of a new church plant. Our pastor and his wife had been such an inspiration to us. As the church had grown, they were often given opportunities to speak locally in the business community. Wanting to be part of what God was doing in their lives, I had prayed and asked God for guidance.
That morning, ever so clearly, I heard Him tell me to buy my pastor’s wife a new suit. Excited at the uniqueness of God’s choice, my faith plummeted when I considered my available assets.
But God, always faithful, had now provided me a way in the wilderness. Now to task! I began baking my delectable crème cheese brownies and white chocolate cookies. I was a woman on a mission.
Delicacies wrapped, I again sought the Lord for pricing and location. He gave me His suggested retail; I left the kids with my mother-in-law, I put on my best looking professional attire and set out – in the rain! God was definitely getting mileage out of this adventure.
All day I splashed and sloshed from neighbor-to-neighbor. I meandered through the local strip malls. Eagerly I knocked on professional office doors. In five hours I had sold only three. Discouraged, but not defeated I cried out to God for more instructions. Oddly enough I felt lead to go to the local hospital and medical plaza.
“Now God, these people are supposed to be eating healthy foods,” I reminded Him. His answer – “GO!”
Within one hour, every tasty treat had been purchased!
Ecstatic at the sum, I called my beloved pastor’s wife and invited her to go shopping with me…I didn’t tell her the trip was actually for her. Reluctantly she accepted.
That Saturday I had the privilege of showering her with a new suit, matching shoes and handbag. Tearfully we eyed the ensemble in the three-way mirror. Although it couldn’t be proven, I do believe the glory of God lighted that dressing room!
What started as an opportunity to treat someone else mushroomed into a thriving business that blessed my family beyond imagination. For the next ten years I regularly sold my pastries every Tuesday and Friday. God used those monies to pay for two weddings, several family vacations and countless opportunities to finance the Gospel.
My nest is empty now. I have resigned as the local “Cookie Lady” except when grandchildren visit. I can hardly wait until they are old enough, so I can tell them of the miraculous power of crème cheese and white chocolate!
