I generally have a ravenous appetite. Thanks to a high rate of metabolism, I'm am constantly snacking on one thing or another throughout the day. During my workday I prefer to gnosh on Rold Gold tiny twists at my desk. This snacking habit is driven in part by caloric need, but also by a craving for salty snacks. In other words, finding fufillment from my food is not only a necessity, but also a source of pleasure.
This is similar to my craving and desire for God. I know I need Him, and I also find great fulfillment from a personal relationship with Him.
When I'm engaged in my personal quiet time with God, I read His word and communicate with Him through prayer. Some days this leads to lengthy journal entries as I reflect upon God's real presence in my life. Other times I elect to commit a particularly meaningful verse to memory, thereby writing it on the tablet of my heart.
There are days when my spiritual appetite is only enough to enable me to nibble at scripture, but there are other days when I devour lengthy passages before I'm satiated. Regardless of the amount of His word that I digest in one sitting, I am never left wanting. God never fails to give me just the right amounts of what I need at the appropriate times. As I have hungered and thirsted after Him for all these years, I have been blessed in tremendous ways. I've tasted and I've seen that the Lord is good.
It has been said that hunger is the best seasoning. I believe that this saying applies on a spiritual level as well. Sadly, this may create a dangerous situation for those who are spiritually starved. Some people's hearts are so empty that they will swallow just about anything. In an attempt to fill their emptiness, they take in whatever looks the most appealing at the moment. In such cases, satisfaction quickly fades, and there is no fulfillment beyond the present moment. Eventually, hunger sets in again.
Those who have been adequately and abundantly nourished by the Holy Spirit have the responsibility of sharing our spiritual meal with those hungry people. We need to show them where it is that they can find lasting fulfillment. Only God can provide the satisfaction they don't even realize they crave.
