I helped my friends break camp so they could go back. The rest of us didn’t understand the orders that were being given, but we had to trust. I looked around, and we still had a large army. Surely this would be enough men to conquer our enemy.
Those that remained moved down to the waters’ edge. Word filtered back through the army that we were to stop and drink before we moved again. My turn came. I knelt down and cupped some of the cool, clear water to my lips. I had barely finished my drink when some men directed me to join a group away from the river.
There were only a few hundred of us left. What were we going to do against our enemy? We could see them in the valley below. There were so many we couldn’t even count them. We waited for orders.
We were given a pitcher and a trumpet. Before dark, we were told to hide a torch in the pitcher. We spread out and quietly circled the enemy camp. Our orders were to wait for the signal trumpet and then break our pitchers, play loudly then shout. Until then, we waited for nightfall.
Suddenly a trumpet broke through the darkness, piecing the quiet. I broke my pitcher, holding my torch high. The shattering pottery echoed in the valley. I breathed in deeply as I moved the trumpet to my lips and blew long and loud. The notes vibrated through us.
I could see a ring of fire encircle the enemy.
Someone shouted, “The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon.” Others joined him. As we continued to play and shout, we watched the enemy turn on one another in confusion, falling by their brothers’ hands. Some ran away in fear, their spirit broken. The Lord had delivered the enemy into our hands that night.
The defeat was made complete after we pursued the enemy and took the lives of both their princes. God was truly with His people.
“And the three companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands to blow withal: and they cried, The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon.” Judges 7:20
