The Almighty said, “Come here little one, we are going to send you to earth to be someone’s daughter.”
She crawled onto His lap and looked into His eyes and said, “What does that mean? I don’t want to leave here.”
“I know,” He said, “but you will be back again one day, and I know just when that will be. You will be happy where I am sending you, and you will make some other people so very, very happy.”
“Will you go with me?” she asked.
“You won’t be able to sit on my lap, but I will be with you and in you and in the people where I am sending you. You can sit on their laps, and it will be almost like sitting on mine.”
Ray and Maggie had been asking the Lord for another child. They had lost so many who were now with the Lord; one little year-old boy, another who died the day of his birth and more miscarriages than they cared to count. Their only child, a boy, was nearing school age, and their hearts longed for a little one again.
Then came the day when Maggie told Ray, “I believe I need to make an appointment with the doctor.”
Fear filled his eyes. “Why, Maggie? Is something wrong?"
“Actually, I think something might be right. I suspect I might be pregnant.”
Ray’s grimace and eyes again spoke of fear, remembering all the hurt they had known. The trip to the doctor confirmed Maggie’s suspicions. Yes! She was pregnant.
Now, as her eyes danced with joy, her trembling voice conveyed her doubts, “Do you think we will get to keep this baby, doctor? Will this one go the way of so many others?”
“You know, Maggie, the medication we used to help you carry your young boy through to term has been proven even more effective. I think you will have a full-term, healthy baby again.”
Her eyes welled up with tears as she confessed, “That would be the best answer to our prayers that we could imagine. Thank you for your encouragement.”
And so it went. Eight months later, Maggie delivered a healthy baby girl, all eight and a half pounds of her. When Ray went home from the hospital, Alan raced from the house to greet him, leaving a slamming screen door and the neighbor lady behind him. Ray pulled Alan onto his lap while still sitting in the car with the door open. He explained to him that the baby was here and healthy and his mama was healthy too.
Alan wrapped his arms around his father but was quiet for a few minutes. Finally he looked at his dad and asked, “Well, what is it?”
Ray threw his head back and laughed heartily. Taking Alan’s face in his hands and looking gleefully into his eyes, he said, “It’s a girl. You have a baby sister.”
Thus began Laura’s life with her mother, father and brother. God had not lied. Laura was very happy and knew she could trust her father and mother to be there for her, no matter what situation she was in. Her brother loved to tease but would also defend her and have fun with her. Laura’s parents were faithful to God’s Word in raising both her and her brother. They loved the Lord and lived that conviction in all they did and said, so it wasn’t hard for Laura to grow into her own relationship with Jesus as her Lord and Savior.
Of course, there were aunts, uncles and cousins nearby too. They shared the same morals, standards and values that her parents and brother lived by and walked with the Lord in their lives. She was indeed blessed and often thanked God for her family. She believed if everyone on earth had a family like hers, Jesus would live in each of their hearts, and the world would be a much nicer place. It would be a little more like heaven.
